Soapy water is enough
The easiest way is to look after plastic furniture. It can be left outside during the winter without worrying about getting rotten. In the spring, such furniture is enough to clean with a duster so it can be used. Plastic furniture is also the cheapest, but often buyers are reluctant to buy them because of the unnaturalness.
Plastic furniture is being replaced by wicker furniture. Not wicker, but polypropylene fabric. The latter is durable, non-invasive, and therefore does not require special care.
There is no need to specially prepare for winter polypropylene wicker seats. “Such furniture can be left outdoors. Of course, if possible, they should be brought inside better. After the winter, it is enough to rinse the material from the dust with soapy water.
For those who do not have the opportunity to pile outdoor furniture inside, they can be covered with special curtains. Often, soft materials are placed on wicker furniture. It is really necessary to bring the latter inside – during the winter moisture can accumulate, and mold to appear.
Styles are dictated by designers
Wicker outdoor furniture is the most popular lately. At least the carpenters claim this. They are valued because they are lightweight and easily transported from one place to another. Aesthetic look is also attractive. Even though furniture designers say that outdoor furniture is dictated by designers, people are more likely to consider practicality. Perhaps due to this, metallic outdoor furniture is becoming popular recently.
In Lithuania furniture can be bought from various regions, like local Lithuania, Scandinavia, Chinese etc. The specialists point out that the quality depends on the manufacturer. For example, Scandinavian wickeder furniture produces frames using only aluminum. Such frames are not getting rusty, not afraid of atmospheric effects. You can also buy Chinese furniture that looks a little different from Scandinavian or other countries. But cheaper Chinese outdoor furniture comes from cheaper materials – for frames not aluminum is used, but instead – cheap metal. It not only can break apart, but also harden. After winter, rust will need to be cleaned or repainted.
Prevention does not harm
Mostly care is required for wooden furniture made of oak, ash, pine, birch or black alder. Although such furniture is durable, after winter some people need not only to wash with soapy water, but also to renew it.
If the surface of the solid wood furniture is oiled, large scratches or stains on it may be removed quickly and inexpensively. Such furniture can be repaired or renewed without difficulty by the owner himself. If the oiled tabletop or bench is spray-dried and difficult to clean, spot should be polished with a soft sandpaper. Grinding is advisable in the direction of cutting.
If the area is damaged and dust is accumulated, the wooden furniture must be smeared with a special oil specifically for the maintenance and renovation of such furniture. It is recommended to keep the furniture upholstered for at least 12 hours and not to put anything on it. The oiled sponge can used for cleaning not only when dirt or scratches appear. It is advisable to do this also prophylactically, especially after the winter. The patina surfaces are sprayed with oil, the color of the furniture is renewed, the structure of the tree is revealed.
Sensitive to atmospheric changes
Solid wood furniture on a varnished or painted surface requires much more maintenance than oiled one. If dust on the surface of lacquered or painted furniture has accumulated, a layer of dirt can be washed with soapy water. If after the winter spills of alcohol appear, you can try to remove it with toothpaste or vinegar. However, this is not always effective, and sometimes it can damage the furniture. Therefore, before removing the stains with a toothpaste or vinegar, it is advisable to try these measures on the edge of the furniture to make sure they do not harm the tree.
In case of small scratches, a household polisher for furniture can be used to remove stains that are easy to clean on the surface of the wood. Carefully clean the dust and dirt, evenly cover the furniture surface with a household polisher and wait until it has dried.
If on the surface of lacquered or painted furniture there are hardly cleaned stains and scratches that can not be removed with a polishing agent, then the surfaces will need to be polished and repainted. The kind of varnish or paint you choose will be best advised by a specialist. Consultation is therefore necessary.
The sun, humidity, water, sudden changes in the air, heat and cold are huge enemies of solid wood furniture. So the appropriate place to protect them from direct sunlight or water should be selected. Other security measures would not hurt.
Well-lit wooden outdoor furniture should be impregnated after the winter. Impregnant on the surfaces should be applied three times. First of all, the surface should be covered with a clear impregnant. It is like a primer that penetrates the tree and provides resistance to pests and fungi. The second time the wooden surface is covered with a color-giving impregnant. And the third layer of wood should protect against ultraviolet rays. Separate use of antiseptics to protect wood from worms and fungi is not necessary. Usually impregnation products already contain antiseptic materials.
